Art Institute Summer Sessions, ages 14-19

in the fine arts studios at Dutchess Community College.

Note: There will be class on July 4th.

Sessions are held in the Allyn J. Washington Center for Science and Art (Art Gallery.) For easiest access to the building, take Cottage Road to Parking Lot D. Refer to Dutchess Community College campus map.

The summer sessions of The Art Institute are for motivated artistically and career-minded teens to develop their creativity, build skills in the visual arts, and prepare portfolios for college. Students work with professional artists who serve as teachers and mentors. Located in the Fine Arts Studios and Photo Lab at Dutchess Community College. There are two sessions offered: June 24 – July 12 & July 15 – August 2.

Description

Advanced Drawing & Painting Concentration
Students explore representational, abstract, and conceptual sensibilities. This CONCENTRATION uses a range of media from charcoal and pastel on paper; water-color and ink painting, mixed media, and acrylic paint on canvas. Students learn to hone their skills of self-expression into personal statements and powerful works of art while developing their portfolios and entering into critiques and dialogues. Students wishing to concentrate in Advanced Drawing & Painting are required to schedule an appointment with our director, Todd Poteet, prior to enrollment. To set an appointment, call 845.471.7477.

Drawing & Painting Concentration 
An advanced foundation course which explores the principles of art & 2D design. Students will explore observational based representational and abstract forms as they develop higher level skills. In addition students will discover new drawing techniques and painting methods through the Mixed Media course. This CONCENTRATION begins to prepare students for advanced study as they pursue portfolio development for college admission.

Photography Concentration
Students explore photo in our fully equipped darkroom, in our Digital Studio and on our landscaped grounds. The emphasis will be on seeing–what is visually significant – and craftsmanship – mastering particular photographic techniques in order to create dynamic photographs. Students learn how a camera works, film processing, innovative techniques, and black-and-white printing. This CONCENTRATION gives students practical experience while gaining an understanding of photography.

NEW! Filmmaking (session 1 only)
Explore the world of creative filmmaking in our fully-equipped production studio! Students learn camera operation and filmmaking techniques, while gaining experience, having fun making personal works, while developing skills in video editing and graphics creation via the Adobe Creative Suite.

Summer Intensive Residential Program (capped at 14)
Enjoy the same great Art Institute summer day program while receiving added bonuses. Participants will enjoy special evening activities, additional challenging night workshops (Tuesday–Thursday), and rewarding weekend art excursions while living in the dorms on campus at Dutchess Community College. Artist RAs living in the dorms will work in a mentor position with students through activities, artistic practices, and project help. In addition, the director will lead students on visits to Woodstock School of Art, The Wassaic Project, and other art focused venues. $3150. (No member price available for this program.) Meals and accommodations included. Sunday, July 14 – Friday, August 2
