Independent Study Project


This course is designed to build a strong portfolio of work as well as critique skills. Students will create or produce works of visual and/or media art demonstrating their personal voice that can be used in applying to colleges, internships, or creative jobs. In-class time will focus on discussing major techniques and compositional theory applied through critique sessions. Students should expect to devote a large portion of time outside of the classroom to completing work.

During the course of the class, guest artists will join the Saturday sessions to offer critique and instruction.

Senior Students completing the course will be given letters of recommendation as well as personal advocacy to the college of their choice.

Chris Seubert, has participated in group exhibitions at numerous museums and galleries and has appeared in American Artist Magazine. He is a Fine Arts Educator, Program Coordinator of Academic Travel, and President of the Adjunct Faculty Association at SUNY Ulster Community College.  Apart from his work with Mill Street Loft (The Art Effect), Chris teaches at SUNY Ulster Community College, the Woodstock School of Art and has lead study abroad programs to Europe.

Guest teachers, artists, and alumni will join the class each week for critiques as well as Art Institute Director, Todd Poteet.

Todd Poteet Director of The Art Effect’s Art Institute and owner of Pen & Ink Creative, a graphic design firm. He holds a BFA in illustration and a Master’s in art education, and has taught at Pratt Institute’s Saturday School & LaGuardia HS for Visual and Performing Arts. He is the recipient of prestigious awards including: the “Friend of the Arts Award”, the Dutchess County Executive Arts Award for Art Education, The “40 Under 40 Shaker Award,” NYSATA’s Patron of the Arts Award and the “Congressional Medal for the Arts.”
