The Art Effect is creating a new narrative in Poughkeepsie and the Hudson Valley with young artists as the focal point. On October 24, we invite you to Create a New Narrative with us, as we bring together diverse groups of stakeholders to experience art forms in new and interesting ways. Art After Dark will feature immersive arts experiences centered around this theme, including a green screen experience and visual arts experience conceived by The Art Effect staff and youth. Proceeds from this event will provide significant support for The Art Effect’s art education and youth programming. 


Journal Ad

Businesses and individuals can purchase congratulatory ads that will be printed in the Art After Dark 2019 event journal. Also included in the journal will be full page professional and student artwork in full color.

Announcing our 2019 Honorees

We are delighted to announce our 2019 Art After Dark Honorees: Karen and Nevill Smythe, and Jason Bard Yarmosky. The Art Effect selected these individuals for their passionate support of youth development in the arts and media, their significant impact on Poughkeepsie and the greater Hudson Valley community, and their extensive involvement with The Art Effect and its predecessors (Spark Media Project and Mill Street Loft).

Karen & Nevill Smythe

Karen and Nevill Smythe are long-term supporters of the arts and community leaders whose dedication and generosity have transformed the Hudson Valley.

Karen was born and raised in Poughkeepsie. A former marketing executive, she became the fourth-generation to run her family’s construction business, C.B. Strain & Son. She has since become the Executive Director of the Beatrix Farrand Garden Association in Hyde Park.  Nevill was born in Philadelphia and raised in Rochester, NY and is a former advertising executive. More recently, he has been Director of Development at Poughkeepsie Day School and Vice President of Programs at the Community Foundation of the Hudson Valley.

Committed to strengthening the Hudson Valley, Karen and Nevill have put their skills to work with several nonprofit organizations. Karen has served on the Board of the Bardavon Theater, the Mid-Hudson Children’s Museum and as a Trustee of Vassar College. Nevill has served on the boards of the Lagrange Association Library, Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation, the Mediation Center of Dutchess County and Community Family Development. He has also served as the Chair of the Chamber Foundation at the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce.

They have been married for 26 years and have two children, Ryan, a writer and Quidditch player in Los Angeles, and Denison who works for the Virginia Athletic Foundation in Charlottesville, VA.

Their association with The Art Effect (both Mill Street Loft and Children’s Media Project/Spark Media Project) goes back many years, and they are proud supporters of the newly merged organization.

Jason Bard Yarmosky

Jason Bard Yarmosky is an internationally renowned figurative painter and a 2006 alumnus of The Art Effect (when it was Mill Street Loft). A graduate of Poughkeepsie High School, Jason went to the School of Visual Arts in New York City, graduating with a BFA in 2010.

Jason’s paintings and drawings have been exhibited and collected internationally. His work has been featured in numerous publications including the Wall Street Journal, Art Forum, Artnet, Blouin Artinfo, Complex, Juxtapoz, American Artist Drawing, American Art Collector, and The Huffington Post, and he is a past winner of the Elizabeth Greenshields Award. His work has been exhibited at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, San Antonio Museum of Art, Brigham Young University Museum of Art, South Dakota Art Museum, Yellowstone Art Museum, Huntsville Museum of Art among others, and with galleries in New York City, Los Angeles, Paris, and Brussels. He has recently had solo exhibitions at the Huntington Museum of Art, the University of Maine Museum of Art. Jason currently lives and works in Brooklyn.

Through his art, Jason pushes the conceptual boundaries of traditional portrait painting and drawing by focusing on aging subjects in contrast to the historical glorification of youth. His artistic work, both classically rendered and theatrically composed, examines the complexities of the aging experience and explores questions of memory, time, and mortality revealed in the tension between the physical and psychological transformations endured by his subjects.

Most recently Jason’s works portray a diverse array of people close to the artist, who may or may not have actually met. These character groupings (which continue to include aging subjects) sitting beside and interacting with each other reflect the artist’s personal relationships individually, and simultaneously create a new narrative on the canvas.

Jason credits The Art Effect as “an important platform for young artists to explore their creativity.”
