Summer Art Institute
The Art Institute’s summer pre-college portfolio development program at the Dutchess Community College campus in Poughkeepsie.
The summer sessions of The Art Institute are for dedicated artistic teens ready to push their limits as they develop their creativity, build skills in the visual arts, and prepare portfolios for college. Students work with professional artists who serve as teachers and mentors. Located in the Fine Arts Studios at Dutchess Community College. There are two sessions offered: July 6-July 24 & July 27-August 14.
Students will choose a focus from 3 areas of concentration each session.Session 1: Advanced Drawing & Painting | Integrated Drawing & Painting | Filmmaking

Advanced Drawing & Painting Session 1 & Session 2
Students will use a wide range of media as they hone their skills of self-expression into personal statements and powerful works of art. Students are required to schedule an interview with our director prior to enrollment. Call 845-471-7477.

Filmmaking Session 1 ONLY
From story-boarding, location scouting and camera techniques, to post production — students will immerse themselves in every step of the filmmaking process. Through creative collaboration and teamwork, as well as building independent projects, students will learn the art of the moving image.

Illustration Session 2 ONLY
This accelerated concentration will build on students’ existing interests in character design, storytelling, and sequential art. Practical assignments allow students to learn how to take and use original photo documentation to create larger than life visual narratives for their illustration portfolios.

Integrated Drawing & Painting Session 1 & Session 2
An accelerated foundational concentration which explores the principles and skills of observation, value, color, and 2D design while also applying these fundamental skills of drawing and painting to photography and mixed media. This series of classes will prepare students for advanced study and portfolio development.

Session 1 — Residential Option:Enjoy the same great Art Institute day program while receiving added bonuses. Participants will enjoy special evening activities, additional evening workshops (Tuesday-Thursday), as well as weekend events and art excursions while living in the dorms at Dutchess Community College. Artist RAs in the dorms will mentor students through activities, artistic practices, and project help. $3,400. Meals and accommodations included. Sunday, July 5 – Friday, July 24, 2020
Visits From CollegesThe Art Institute will host several college visits throughout the summer at no additional cost. College admissions representatives come and engage with our students. Students, family, teachers, and friends are invited to attend these college visits, talk with representatives, show their portfolio work and get feedback, and learn about the application process.
